So What If Power Companies Kill Birds?

A study published by an environmental organization claims the U.S. government is underestimating the number of birds killed by wind turbines. The Daily Caller apparently thinks this is a big deal .

I don’t. I remember the weekend a couple of years ago when the environment knocked out my electric power at home, and I came in to the office, got online, and read about people wanting to prosecute power companies for killing birds . Life depends on energy, and modern life depends on electricity. No wild bird that died flying into a turbine ever gave you as much as the electricity such turbines can produce.

Now, there’s an argument that it’s cronyism to prosecute less politically popular energy companies that kill birds while sparing wind power companies that do likewise. Perhaps so. But the whole point of equal justice under law is to protect human life and human flourishing . And you can protect both equality and human life by never sacrificing any form of energy production for a bird.
