NYC Businesses Fight Soda Ban

Over last week's holiday, New York businesses continued to advocate your right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of a very large Coke . It's good to see them fighting back, but a spokesman for Mayor Michael R.

Bloomberg said the city agency that will decide whether to implement his proposed ban on large sodas is specifically designed to make public opposition futile -- or in his words, "not to be subject to political pressure." This is a vice it shares with many regulatory agencies.

Still, in the long run, fighting back -- if the companies can keep the principles straight -- can change the culture so that bureaucrats will no longer dare, in the name of basing policy on science, make policy in defiance of human nature and the basic human need to make one's own decisions.

Here's a recent case where a local regulatory agency did back down .
