John McDonnell, running to succeed Gordon Brown as head of the British Labour Party, said in a speech at the GMB Union Congress that he wished he could “go back to the 1980s and assassinate [Prime Minister Margaret] Thatcher." (The GMB Union was formerly the General, Municipal, Boilermakers and Allied Trade Union.)

The Gulf Spill

According to a story by the Reuters news service, Standard & Poor’s has cut the rating on BP bonds by one notch: from AA to AA-minus. S&P said:"The downgrade reflects our opinion on the significant operational challenges that UK-headquartered oil major BP continues to face to stem or contain the leak from one of its wells in the Gulf of Mexico."
